Full story

Our Power Infrastructure Project team has been working hard behind the scenes to upgrade and improve the power supply at Whittington Hospital.

This is a major, long-term project that will take a few years to complete but on Monday, the team celebrated a huge milestone.

On Monday, our team successfully connected the hospital’s electrical cables to a new high-voltage power supply.

We’re now pleased to share that Whittington Hospital is connected to a powerful new 8,500 KVA supply, (to put that into perspective, last week, we were running on 2,600 KVA!)

While that was previously enough to support our operations, our organisation is growing, and our facilities are evolving. Future projects, including our maternity transformation, will require this extra power boost.

Now that this milestone has been reached, the team can focus on the next phase: building a new energy centre on the site of the old boiler house.

The old boiler house and chimney are set for demolition, and no, it won’t be a dramatic explosion! It’ll be a carefully planned, gradual dismantling. In its place, the new energy centre will become the powerhouse behind our expanded electricity needs.

We’re proud to share that once complete, this project will save us a lot of money in electricity costs, allowing us to invest those funds into other areas of the trust.

Even more importantly, the environmental impact will be significant  we expect an incredible 80% reduction in carbon emissions in our local area.

This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without our amazing Project Lead, Ahmed Hassan, Managing Director of , and the incredible collaboration of:
  • Our Estates & Facilities teams, led by Liam Triggs.
  • Project partners: Northmores, WT (UK & Europe), Arup, Eta Projects, Trebes Consulting, and Supply Chain Partner GRAHAM.
  •  Project Lead and onsite delivery: AH Engineering services (AHES), Darrell Reilly Snr . Delivery Manager, and Ian Moynes, H&S Lead.
  • Key Trust leaders: Nick Woellwarth (Strategy Development Lead), Jonathan Gardner (Initiation SRO), and Terry Whittle (Current SRO).

And every Trust colleague who happily adapted to disruptions and greatly supported power shutdowns.
